Last Saturday, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo celebrated his 28th birthday at a Dallas nightclub. On hand to warble "Happy Birthday" and make a spectacle of the traditional cake-eating was his girlfriend, Jessica Simpson.
You know, talking at this juncture just makes me feel kind of dirty, but I'm a horrible person plus it's kind of my job, so here I go.
There are many people in the world who do not have brains or talent, but what they do have is ambition and the burning desire to be famous. This is where Jessica Simpson falls. Sure, she can sing, but her voice isn't very strong and she was never going to have an enduring career with that pseudo-baby-talk that somehow sounded appropriate in the late 90s and early 00s and only then.
Knowing this, she tapped into her "personality" as her main brand, as many young women were doing at the time (and continue to do). She, and her creepy dad, spoke openly about her virginity, her relationship with Nick Lachey, her marriage, her squeaky clean sex life. She tried to parlay that into an acting career with dismal results. Her marriage fell apart and by that time her music career was all but over. While Nick seemed to gradually shrug celebrity off as a phase in life that had come to an end, Jessica clung to it. What made the whole situation even weirder was that Jessica's little sister, Ashlee, had weirdly rose to fame and snagged herself a stable relationship. Jessica's whole schtick was out of her hands.
I get the feeling that Jessica is now trying to enter some new phase as a high-profile football wife and is, perhaps, trying too hard. Sure, she and Romo could be and probably are genuinely in love, but the PDA pictured above seems so telling.

Jessica Simpson forgot lyrics to two of her songs during a recent performance. Do you think it's time for Simpson to retire?
