Wesley Snipes has reportedly been sentenced to three years in prison for tax evasion. The judge ruled that he could surrender at a later date rather than immediately. Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department's Tax Division, Nathan J. Hochman said:
"Snipes' long prison sentence should send a loud and crystal clear message to all tax defiers that if they engage in similar tax defier conduct, they face joining him and his co-defendants ... as inmates in prison."

Snipes received a conviction in February on three misdemeanor charges for not filing his taxes. Although the government claimed he owed $2.7 million, attorneys for Snipes argued it was only $228,000. While no fine was imposed, the three-year sentence was the maximum sentence. Ouch!

Denzel Washington and Woody Harrelson reportedly wrote letters to support Snipes' defense to appeal for leniency.

Wow, it seems a little harsh to put someone away for prison for three years for failing to pay $228K. They should've required he pay a fine and serve some time as well, but 3 years - yikes! I guess they really wanted to make an example out of him eh?
