"Katie wishes she didn’t care about the gossip and rumors, but it is hard for her not to," a friend of the actress tells OK! "It's hurtful when it comes to people lying about her family. As much as she'd like to, she can’t just ignore it ... she has never been happier and she doesn’t understand why people don't want to believe that."

She is such a sweet person and never has anything bad to say about anyone," continues the unnamed friend. "She doesn’t understand why some people are wishing problems on her and Tom."

The last few weeks have been particularly brutal around the TomKat rumor mill. In Touch magazine claimed that Cruise and Holmes were going through a trial separation. Holmes was said to be moving to Manhattan with the couple's daugher Suri with plans on focusing on a Broadway career.
