Sharon Stone Apologizes for Remark on China Quake

Apparently no one ever taught Sharon Stone that "kicking someone when they're down" (e.g. suffering a major natural disaster) is not a great idea.  After saying publicly that China's earthquake may have been karma for China's treatment of Tibet, and subsequently being dropped from Dior's Chinese ads and having her movies banned in the world's most populous country, she has apologized.  Perhaps China's treatment of Sharon is karma for her insensitive remarks?  Star blogger MamaPop has the full story…

As Amy reported, Sharon Stone is a big jackass.  Yesterday, that foot she stuck in her mouth has delivered her a swift kick in the ass (or some such mixed metaphor) as the world's most populous country began boycotting her films... and her face.

Ng See-Yeun, the head of one of China's biggest cinema chains has said that Stone's movies (the upcoming The Year Of   Getting To Know Us, with Lucy Liu, and Five   Dollars A Day, with Christopher Walken) will not be shown in his theaters on the mainland or in Hong Kong.  (See-Yeun is also chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong filmmakers.)  He called Stone's remarks "inappropriate," which is a much more diplomatic adjective than "fucking asinine," which is what I called them.

Beijing department stores have removed Christian Dior advertisements with Stone's face on them, and Chinese citizens are calling for an apology.  Several have posted their demands on YouTube, including one man who said:

Why   can't we put the debate about the Chinese government away and just think   that people died? When I watched her video I was very upset about her   opinion. She is a good lady, she is beautiful and she works for the world,   for everybody who needs help. But this time I can't accept her opinion.

Sharon Stone should say sorry to the people who died in the earthquake. I   just want to get everybody's attention and let her know her opinion is wrong.

Which, again, is more diplomatic than what I've said about her, which is that she's a huge asshole.  And that her hotness is vastly overstated.  Just saying.

Incidentally, there was a great rant at Jezebel this week about Sharon Stone being a big huge moron and Westerners' use of the word "karma."  Quoth the Jezebel: Saying "karma is a bitch" to couch in hippie moral superiority a basic conveyance of schadenfreude is highly irritating.  HA!  Please read the whole thing; it rocks.

Edited to add: since I typed this up, she has apologized.  And I still think she should STFU for the good of humanity.
