Former Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall has been talking to The Daily Mail about juggling fatherhood and a career. Hucknall, 47, and girlfriend Gabriella Wesberry welcomed their first child, daughter Romy True, last June.
On helping out his wife after her C-section as well as recording: “So I’d be with her and Romy when I’d suddenly get a call from my producer Andy Wright, telling me to get across to the studio to lay down some vocals. Then I’d be back to change a nappy and make Gabriella some tea.”
On Romy as inspiration to the album: “In my mind, this is Romy’s album. She’s everywhere on it. It should have the sound of babies crying instead of backing vocals. I remember being constantly tired, but I wouldn’t change a thing. It was magical.”
On becoming a dad at 47: “What helped a lot was becoming a dad at 47. I can’t begin to imagine how I would have coped when I was just starting out with Simply Red. Gabriella and I would have been another one of those divorce statistics.”
