TATUM O'NEAL told the New York Post that her weekend drug arrest stemmed from profound sadness over the loss of her dog to cancer three weeks ago.

"I'm still sober," the Oscar-winning actress told the Post in a telephone call after her arraignment in a New York court on Monday. "Just when I was about to change that and wreck my life, the cops came and saved me."

The 44-year-old O'Neal said that while there was no excuse for what she did, the recent loss of her Scottish terrier, Lena, eventually set her off. "She got old. She got cancer. She was the fabric of our family."

O'Neal, the daughter of actor RYAN O'NEAL, was released on her own recognizance after her arraignment on a misdemeanor drug charge stemming from her arrest Sunday on suspicion of buying cocaine on a Manhattan street.
