UPDATE: Clay Aiken Reveals He's Gay

"It was the first decision I made as a father," Clay Aiken says about coming out as a gay man in the new issue of People. "I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn't raised that way, and I'm not going to raise a child to do that."

Clay makes the revelation in the next edition of the magazine, which hits stands this Friday. He will be pictured with his newborn son, Parker, and talk about the importance of being truthful regarding his sexuality.

"Whether it be having a child out of wedlock, or whether it be simply being a homosexual, it's going to be a lot," he says regarding the reactions of his fans. Still, he says his fans "know that I've never intended to lie to anybody at all. ... But if they leave, I don't want them to leave hating me."

The singer also reveals that he told him mom about four years ago, after an emotional parting with his brother who was shipping off to Iraq.

"I started crying in the car," he says. "It was dark. I was sitting there, thinking to myself. I don't know why I started thinking about it ... I just started bawling. She made me pull over the car and it just came out."

His mom "started crying. She was obviously somewhat stunned. But she was very supportive and very comforting." Even now, Clay admits, "She still struggles with things quite a bit, but she's come a long way."

He is scheduled to appear in an already-taped interview about this headline-grabbing revelation with ABC News' Diane Sawyer, with promos beginning to run Wednesday morning, and the interview running on "Good Morning America" starting Thursday.

Clay, who has long deflected questions about his sexuality, recently welcomed his infant son with his longtime female friend Jaymes Foster. The baby was conceived via in-vitro fertilization and was born in August.

  • I'm the Mother of a gay son. No one knows the pain and hurt experienced by family members and most of all the person that is gay. Is it right? No, but do they have a choice? No. Their only choice is whether or not to live the life style. But most of all they are humans and don't have to answer to any other human. So lay off, it hurts all involved without hateful comments.

  • I am not surprised by this revelation. He avoided the issue which is his right. I just hope Clay and Jaymes raise and happy, healthy son together. That's what is important!

  • Why is this news? Am I prejudice about different sexual preferences or races? Absolutely not. I fully support whatever a person deems important in their happiness... but it absolutely DRIVES ME NUTS when celebrities deny deny deny... only to change their tune later and "announce" their news.

  • SO? NO BIG DEAL! I have no problem with Clay's sexual orientation because I am a fan who has loved his personality, his voice. He has the right to choose the kind of life he would like to live...as long as he does not do wrong to anyone...One can be straight but is rude, hateful, finds fault in others....SO...BEFORE YOU SAY ANYTHING -- LOOK AT YOURSELF...DON'T POINT A FINGER BECAUSE THERE ARE THREE OTHERS POINTING AT YOU....

  • His sexuality doesn't make any difference one way or the other. Good for him for having the courage to come out for his own peace of mind and happiness and to set an example for his son. It's really nobody else's business. I hope this takes a weight off his shoulders. I'm still a fan and don't anticipate this having any effect on that.

  • Why is it so important to everyone? What does it really matter when there are more important things going on in the world. It doesn't matter to me one bit.I love Clay because of the entertainer that he is not
because of what he does in his private life.

  • Most of the world knew this already. Althou it is good for him to come out with it because he was only fooling his self. I like Clay Aiken so what he is gay, now a days it is so out in the open it do not suprise you like it did 20- 30 years ago.Live your life and enjoy your new son he is a blessing.

  • First of all it doesn't make one bit of difference to me about Clay being gay. To me it's nobody's business what a person is. People should just leave him alone. Let him raise his son the best way he know's how. He will make a terrific dad. Whether he is gay or straight doesn't mean a hell of beans to me. He is a terrific singer and that is never going to change. So the people out there who are slamming him, why don't you look in your own back yard for a change. No one is perfect is this life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm sure it had to be hard. Unfortunately in our world there is such a stigma about being gay and there shouldn't be. He's a human being with an awesome talent and I love him the same now as I did the first time I heard him on AI. Congratulations on the birth of your son and I wish you only the best.

  • I would like say thia I am really proud that Clay Aiken and Lance Bass and Neil Patrick Harris , TR Knight , Chad Allen true honest about being gay . Frankly who cares what the straight world says about us . I wish the straight world would wake up now.
    anonymous anonymous 9/25/08 Reply

    • So the world should "wake up" and just embrace gays. Who have made a life style choice that is immorral, unhealthy and life threatening. Yeah, huh, thanks but no. You people gross me out. Clay Aiken is part of the problem, not part of the solution.
