Everyone knows about the Statue
of Liberty
who holds her golden lamp in the middle
of New York Harbor. She was the first
glimpse of America for millions of
immigrants and continues to beckon hoards
of out-of- towners every day.
A lesser known, but
similarly arresting sight is the Statue
of Liberty that reigns at 43 West 64th
Street (between Broadway and Central Park
West). For the best view of this
particular Lady Liberty, stand opposite
63rd Street, at the top of the steps
leading to Lincoln Center Plaza from
Columbus Avenue and look east towards
64th Street. Perched on top of a building
that houses O'Neal's restaurant and the
Liberty Warehouse, and wearing the
familiar green patina, is a smaller
version of the famous original.
There is another replica
downtown at 219 West Broadway. She's made
of iron rather than copper and weighs
only one ton rather than thousands, but
the points of her crown, the broken
shackles at her feet, and the tablet in
her hand are all similar to
Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi's model. Of
course, the main difference between this
statue and the world-famous Lady is that
this one only lights the way to El
Teddy's, a nearby former-Mexican
restaurant, while the statue on Liberty
Island lights the way to all of New York.
