ALL ABOARD THE
ROOSEVELT ISLAND TRAM
We all know about the great
deal and great views of NYC
involved in riding the Staten
Island ferry,
but for something different, consider the
Roosevelt Island Tram. The trip is short
(only 4-minutes) but the views are
spectacular and the trip costs the same
as the subway: $2. Roosevelt
Island is a serene space
compared to the madness of midtown
Manhattan. There is a bus that meets the
tram and circles the residential area,
but you can also walk around to check out
the island's 5 parks and 6 landmarked
buildings, including the Blackwell House
(1796), the Octagon Tower (1839), and a
gothic-style lighthouse on the northern
end. The Tram Plaza is at 59th St. and
2nd Avenue.
REACHING THE TOP OF
THE EMPIRE STATE
Fun fact: the Empire State
Building has 73 elevators
that move through 7 miles of shafts. But
don't let that (or the frequent long
lines) dissuade you from visiting. The
art deco style is gorgeous and the views
are not to be missed!
SOMETHING FOR
EVERYONE
Make plans to visit one of
NYC's great museums today -- with more
than 120 museums within the New York City
limits, you can be sure that you will
find something of interest, no matter
what you're passionate about. For
example, if you like American history,
you can learn more about New York's
"melting pot" heritage with a
visit to the Ellis Island
Immigration Museum or
the Lower East Side
Tenement Museum.

NYC museums.
MORE NEW YORK
SIGHTSEEING IDEAS
NYC offers plenty of free attractions for
those who are on a budget. For example,
take a self-guided tour of Rockefeller Center
and discover the plethora of art-deco
masterpieces this 19-building complex
contains. Or check out the sober grandeur
of Grant's Tomb
National Monument
near Riverside Church
and while you're there, climb the Church
belltower for fabulous city views. Want
more ways to watch your wallet? You'll
find plenty of ideas in our Saving a Few Bucks
section.
LONG ISLAND WINERIES
While we love all that NYC
offers, every now and then, we think it
is worth it to jump in the car and enjoy
the area outside the city. Invariably,
when we are plotting one of these
escapes, we think of Long Island, and of
the great wineries concentrated on the
North Fork. Here is an alphabetical list of
places we've visited on these tours.
CHOWING
DOWN IN CHINATOWN
We love one of former mayor Ed Koch's
favorite restaurants, a place on Mott
Street called The Peking Duck
House. (After all, who
are we to disagree with someone who once
said, "New York is not a problem.
New York is a stroke of genius!"). Wo Hop,
which is diagonally across the street, is
a reliable choice, too.
