well first off its bad and a bad thing to teach kids he and other people who do it should think of what their teaching othera and people who look up to him .
-
The CURRENT president has admitted that he was so stoned during his high school days that he doesn't remember most of them...What is all the hype about Phelps smoking some pot now? Why didn't the media whine about their messiah being a druggy?

He is a role model to children, pot is illegal, and getting high is not cool.
-
Just plain stupid...Maybe he didnt read his endorsement contracts totally, which I'm sure has a drop clause for this kind of behavior. This is the problem with the American culture today. NO ACCOUNTABILITY. He should be dropped from most or all his endorsements for this stunt then maybe the rest of the american society will understand there are consequences for every action
-
He's not a role model. The media makes him that. He isn't a Saint. I mean he smoked some pot, it is better than driving drunk which he has done. It is being blown way out of proportion. Even Robert Downey jr didn't have this much press and he was a Coke head.
-
What is most disturbing is all the comments from people who think it's not a big deal just because other people have done it. It is illegal and a stupid thing to do no matter who you are. It just shows how much American morals have gone into the toilet.
-
...Oh, so because it's illegal makes it so much worse? Tell me, if he was drunk off his ass, wouldn't it be the same thing? I have no problem with the whole "morals have gone down the toilet", but because it is an illegal drug (which should be legalized and is rapidly becoming more decriminalized throughout the U.S.) makes it so much worse?
-
robert downey jr had to go to jail to learn. your right maybe that is what phelps needs.
-
-
Leave the super athlete alone. He admitted he used bad judgement and apologized for it. President Bill Clinton admitted he toked up, even though he did not Inhale. Let the man get on with his life. Most people don't admit their mistakes and Run from the Cure, he did not.
-
He's a BOY and HUMAN, people. Lay off!
-
wait, first of all you dont even know what was in the bong and what he was smoking... yes it was dumb and he should've been more careful. but like somebody said earlier, he's human. he's gonna make mistakes so lay off.. im sure you've screwed up many times in your life too.
-
Micheal has ADHD which causes him to be hyper-active and if marijuana helps him become calm then he should be able to take it. As for the media their just trying to make everyone look bad by taking a little situation to far.

Phelps retracts apology -
hey there, if you use my last message please do not use my name. thanks
-
What it should show people is that people should not worship people. It has naught to do with his ability to swim...and those who would say take away his medals are just silly....he should have been more careful..but I also think that that newspaper who filmed this is only out to bring people down and they seemed tohave a special goal of doing it to Phelps. Can the Brits swim??
-
I am a big pot smoker myself, but I have to say, this deserves all of the publicity it is getting. Is it wrong for him to smoke pot? No. Is it stupidity to let someone take a picture of you doing it? Absolutely. Even if there could be claims that "he didn't know it was being taken", he shouldn't have been at a party where he knew people would be watching this kind of activity and smoked it.
-
I think it's unfair to hold someone who is merely a professional swimmer up to such high standards. People need to realize that there are many people who swim everyday, who act everyday, sing everyday, it just so happens that these poeple do it on a larger scale. Holding these "larger scale" figures on such a high pedalstal is not healthy anyway. Take away everything (gold medals, covers of magazines) and this guy looks and is just a normal guy!! Let's be more mature!!
-
well I think that he deserves it for what he has done. That doesn't make him a bad person but of all the time he spent trying to get people to look up to him has failed. He is still pretty cool but he should know when to stop.
-
The only persons responsible for a kid picking up any bad habits including smoking pot (which honestly isn't even that bad compared to crack, cocaine, meth, RX pills.... C'mon) are the parents of said children, I'm sorry that your child doesn't have enough respect for you that you have to blame someone else for raising them wrong.
Deal with it. Please Grow up World.

Everyone smokes pot.
It's not a big deal. People who think it's a big deal have a stick up their a**es.
Nothing bad as ever happened because of smoking pot. Some of the greatest minds in the world have and currently do smoke. -
get a life.
this country is not going to hell in a hand basket
we are already there -
give me a brake!! it's is own business what he does on his own time!! everyone does pot!! remember it was given to him!! the kids that gave it to him should be prosocuted and proprobly the judge son was the one that gave it to him!!
-
LMAO. Apparently you can smoke pot AND win olympic medals. He's a role model for pot smokers everywhere! Cannabis laws in the United States are based on bigotry and corporate interests; no one has any moral obligation to abide by those laws.
-
I have no idea what the big deal is. It's pot. If it was cocaine or something along the lines of being a hard drug I would understand. Let the guy just light his stuff and leave him alone.
-
Really? Who really cares about this? It's just pot, there are far more harmful substances out there that are available legally. Yet since some antiquated laws say that marijuana is illegal the media has to jump on it. Gimme a break.
-
Really? Who cares?
-
I think someone who has trained for years and gained 8 gold medals should be able to "party" a little in "privacy", however, he made a poor judgement call. My question is, "Was it HIS Bong?" I highly DOUBT it, knowing the training involved to be an olympian. Perhaps his message to young people should be something about "peer pressure". Gee, I wonder if the person who videotaped this "set him up" to sell a photo to the paparazzi! In any event, I think Michael Phelps demonstrates a great sense of character as at least he is not a liar. I am not a marijuana user and drink moderately (socially) but I have known some marijuana users and agree that if alcohol is legal, so should the use of marijuana. I think there are a lot more automobile deaths as a result from consuming alcohol.
-
Michael can swim fast. So what? He is so stupid that he gets DUI's and is pot smoking fool. Am I impressed. No. I am impressed with someone who can contribute to society and is a good person. I don't want him around my child.
-
I think the media went too far overboard with him in the lst place.
He accomplished miracles but he is not worth all the attention
he gets. Some of the picture shown of him (not in competition)
was almost Playboy material. He doesn't empress me at all.
He should be more careful about body exposure as well as
his smoking habits. I feel sorry for his mom.-
I'd smoke some trees with Phelps any day.
-
I love all the ignorant comments about how evil weed is. It seems like everybody watched those 1950's anti pot propoganda films and believed them...see more
-
-
WHO DOESNT SMOKE POT? SERIOUSLY! Phelps just won frikin 7 gold MEDALS! hes makin enough endourcments and hes aloud to live a normal young mans life. if i were him ide be partying it up by now too. whos with me.
-from dray -
exactly!!!
-
I think that he made a mistake, first by smoking it and second by letting his photo be taken doing it. I don't want my kids thinking it is ok to do it, but I will not say his is bad. He apologized for it and that's that kids make mistakes. If it was your kid would you be all gun ho on charging him. no and if charging him what about the others at the party he wasn't the only one smoking that stuff.
-
First, it's not illegal everywhere. Two, would you want someone taking photos of you at every life moment....how do you think your life actions would stand up to your child's eyes. Three, He didn't ask to be your child's role model, you put him there along with the media. Four, He's a young athletic that has worked hard and has reached many achievements. Five, get your own life, that way you'll have less time to sit around and pass judgment on others.
-
FINALLY!! It's about time someone and something like this happened. Maybe will open our eyes to the real danger in this world. Come on folks, WAKE UP and smell the POT!
-
HAPPY 4:20 EVERYONE!!
-
People are blowing this wayyyyyy out of context. A lot of icons have smoked pot. So what? It's the past, and he's obviously moved on from this. Sure, he may have set some bad examples, but he's publicly correcting them. People are impulsive, he's young. What happened, happened. Get over it already.
-
Besides, he's super hot. ;D
-
Lil Wayne rocks and he gets High On Michaels part it was just bad judgement
-
who cares...i bet the ppl reporting this or even bashing on him have smoked pot or even drank and then drove home. i get that he is an icon and ppl/kids look up to him but dont you think the media should mind their own business sometimes.
-
I think he need`s to be careful,he might bite off more than he can chew, and NO I don`t think the media was being to harsh.
-
I cannot believe what has become of this...it is a travesty. I hope whoever snapped that picture of Michael Phelps and put it out for the world to see feels like crap. Whoever it is must have a very lonely life. Would everyone be so up in arms about this if he were holding a drink in his hand? Doubt it, yet alcohol kills more people every year than marijuana. And about being a role model and all that...parents should be role models, not superstars and athletes. If you don't want your kid to smoke pot, talk to them and tell them so...since when is it Michael Phelps' job to raise your kids...get a life and get over it...
-
Thank you.
-
Getting high may not be cool and I most certainly don't advocate it but parents should also teach their kids to not idolize athletes and celebrities to the point where they can't make mistakes. They are human like the rest of us
-
Considering that until 1952 pot was legal, and in the early 1920's alcohol was made illegal then was made legal again after a large outcry of polititions!!! The issue should be more of why the country tries to control everything, and that the Constitution gives us the right, as Americans, enjoy life our way. The government has more control over what the average American does than they have over the busnesses that take advantage of the general public!!!!! ON an other note the media has made some big bad mistakes about how they handle the story lines!!!
-
Here lets see.... if they make pot legal they can charge taxes, then maybe there would be more money for the government to run this country without getting loans from China.... Oh another thought, maybe the government should stop giving loans to other country's then forgiving them the loans...... Is that really the issue here? What the%%$%^)+, this is going way to far..... the media needs to start looking at the real stories about the economy and stop trying to redirect the public view away from what is really wrong with this country........ The big business's that's who are running the show on capital hill.... get rid of the lobbist.
-
Phelps didn't do anything wrong at at. It is the asinine laws that are wrong. Anyone with half a brain knows that pot should be legalized. I feel like boycotting Kelloggs -don't they know where half their sales come from? LOL People with the munchies, duh!
-
A whole lot of people get high, and the sanctamonious hypocrites who complain should just get a grip.
-
what douche bag at the party Phelps was at would not only take a picture of him doing it but, leek it to the media. if i was Michael Phelps i would send some of my guys out to him up.
-
hey laura we're not talking about politics we're talking about how much of a ing BEAST Michael Phelps is.
-
oh and learn how to spell. it's businesses
-
For all of the hard asses who think Phelps is in the wrong. Lets take a look at all of the awesome people who smoke weed:
Barrack Obama
Lil Wayne AKA Weezy Baby
Nuf Said -
Michael phelps should decide if he wants to be successful, or a pot head. that is to bad that children have to know this crap about there heros.
-
Mistake, yes, unfair no. He is special, I feel badly for him but one must learn that there are consequences for such behavior!
-
Carl Sagan, the great scientist and author, smoked pot often. So have many of our greatest artists, entertainers and leaders! But because of a few prudes and hypocrites, it is illegal, while the equal or greater dangers of tobacco and alcohol are legal.
-
he was at a private party and wasn't competing...what about snoop and lindsey and all of the other celebs that smoke...at least he wasn't doing performance enhancing drugs and doing world events. he is drug tested during his competitions and that's all that should matter
-
if its okay to show kids that smoking pot is okay even to their role models, then why the heck are we promoting "NO for DRUGS"-- are we not concern of Values, Respect and Morality our kids need to learn? This is why the world is failling apart--
-
It's a mistake he made and he regretted doing it. I think the media shouldn't be too harsh on him. Give him a chance people!
-

-
I experimented when I was younger as well. What I learned? I'm allergic to pot (and yes I'm sure it wasn't bad). Lesson learned. Now with him, he's learned an even greater lesson. When in the eye of the public and you do something like that, everyone will know...Hopefully he didn't have a good experience with the stuff.
-
He's a young kid yet, and at his age they still make mistakes, leave the kid alone. I'm sure he has suffered enough through all of this already! Just because he he has accomplished so much in his life, it doesn't mean he's not human and can't make mustakes. He's still a good person!
-
"I recognize the seriousness of this mistake. I've learned from this mistake and will continue learning from this mistake for the rest of my life." Apology by Michael Phelps on Dec.29, 2004 after being sentenced to community service for a DUI
Maxi Malone -
lol im 16 i smoke pot and now i look up to michael phelps cause he showes that even a olimpic gold metal winner can smoke pot and still win
-
Michael Phelps is da . No wonder why homie's got such great lung capacity, he is rockin the gonje! Tell you this much, if i were him you would never here me appologize for getting high. Keep tokin Mike! Keep tokin! I got your back!
-
Once again keep on keepin on MIKE! LIVE YOUR LIFE!
-
media has put their profession into shame...they are supposed to publish a report and move on...they are destroying a young man's life who brough glory to their country...shame on all of you for being Hypocrites
-
I'd like to know who the jackass was that sold the picture to the press. His ass should be kicked.
-
I will no longer be purchasing kellogs product and many of the people I know will not either.
-
This should be a lesson, but not for kids. For all those people who think all pot smokers are lazy and unproductive. This man is by far the worlds greatest swimmer and possibly the greatest olympian ever, to discredit him for smoking grass is a black mark on our society. Get a clue people!!
-
yes it is marijuana not riods they are acting like when he hit that bong it made him swim better. Then they played the commercial of the above the influence that shows the little girl sunk into the couch. I bet Phelps was in the pool the next morning its not like he is out getting drunk and driving. Marijuana is not a bad thing and if you still think it is put your cigarette and tail down and get out of the fifties and read some info marijuana doesn't do anything to the user but make him want to eat more and with the workout he does the more food the better.
-
people should just mind their own f**king business.
-
people should really just mind their own business. Leave the kid alone already! He's just having fun. Rememebr what that is???
-
"What is most disturbing is all the comments from people who think it's not a big deal just because other people have done it. It is illegal and a stupid thing to do no matter who you are. It just shows how much American morals have gone into the toilet." Yeah you are telling me...when judgemental and ignorant people like yourself always say the same thing "its illegal." There is NO reason for it to be illegal, none. What the hell would you know about American morals? So you think you are a better person than a pot smoker right? What makes you so special? Nothing. Get a life.
-
Yes, the media is being too hard on Phelps. However, he shouldn't take my support as a compliment. You mess up, learn from it and do better; that's my point.
-
honestly most teenagers try marijuana, if it wasnt phelps it would have been someone else. it has nothing to do with this public figure bull
-
Great swimmer! My name is Lynda Matejka and I am running for governor of California. If I win the election, I pledge to serve the entire 4 years, unlike Sarah Palin who did not honor her commitment to Alaska and to her supporters. Sarah Palin is a quitter! Palin & Prejean are self-absorbed delusional women. They have had 14 1/2 mins. of fame more than they deserve!
-
everyone in their life had try pot at lest once in their life
-
Look at all the NFL, MBA & MLB so called stars, they are on drugs, rape women, beat up their girlfriends or wives & Murder helpless animals & then test positive for drugs. What do we do then we give them a BIG contract, oh thats because they are BLACK, what a suprise.
