Do you think the media is too harsh on Michael Phelps' controversial pot smoking photo?

  • Yes, they are being way too harsh. Even ex-presidents have admitted to smoking marijuana.
  • No, he is an icon for many young kids, he should have been more careful.

  • Just plain stupid...Maybe he didnt read his endorsement contracts totally, which I'm sure has a drop clause for this kind of behavior. This is the problem with the American culture today. NO ACCOUNTABILITY. He should be dropped from most or all his endorsements for this stunt then maybe the rest of the american society will understand there are consequences for every action

  • He's not a role model. The media makes him that. He isn't a Saint. I mean he smoked some pot, it is better than driving drunk which he has done. It is being blown way out of proportion. Even Robert Downey jr didn't have this much press and he was a Coke head.

  • What is most disturbing is all the comments from people who think it's not a big deal just because other people have done it. It is illegal and a stupid thing to do no matter who you are. It just shows how much American morals have gone into the toilet.
    anonymous anonymous 2/3/09 Reply

    • ...Oh, so because it's illegal makes it so much worse? Tell me, if he was drunk off his ass, wouldn't it be the same thing? I have no problem with the whole "morals have gone down the toilet", but because it is an illegal drug (which should be legalized and is rapidly becoming more decriminalized throughout the U.S.) makes it so much worse?
      anonymous anonymous 2/3/09

  • Leave the super athlete alone. He admitted he used bad judgement and apologized for it. President Bill Clinton admitted he toked up, even though he did not Inhale. Let the man get on with his life. Most people don't admit their mistakes and Run from the Cure, he did not.

  • Micheal has ADHD which causes him to be hyper-active and if marijuana helps him become calm then he should be able to take it. As for the media their just trying to make everyone look bad by taking a little situation to far.

  • What it should show people is that people should not worship people. It has naught to do with his ability to swim...and those who would say take away his medals are just silly....he should have been more careful..but I also think that that newspaper who filmed this is only out to bring people down and they seemed tohave a special goal of doing it to Phelps. Can the Brits swim??

  • I am a big pot smoker myself, but I have to say, this deserves all of the publicity it is getting. Is it wrong for him to smoke pot? No. Is it stupidity to let someone take a picture of you doing it? Absolutely. Even if there could be claims that "he didn't know it was being taken", he shouldn't have been at a party where he knew people would be watching this kind of activity and smoked it.

  • I think it's unfair to hold someone who is merely a professional swimmer up to such high standards. People need to realize that there are many people who swim everyday, who act everyday, sing everyday, it just so happens that these poeple do it on a larger scale. Holding these "larger scale" figures on such a high pedalstal is not healthy anyway. Take away everything (gold medals, covers of magazines) and this guy looks and is just a normal guy!! Let's be more mature!!

  • The only persons responsible for a kid picking up any bad habits including smoking pot (which honestly isn't even that bad compared to crack, cocaine, meth, RX pills.... C'mon) are the parents of said children, I'm sorry that your child doesn't have enough respect for you that you have to blame someone else for raising them wrong.

  • I think someone who has trained for years and gained 8 gold medals should be able to "party" a little in "privacy", however, he made a poor judgement call. My question is, "Was it HIS Bong?" I highly DOUBT it, knowing the training involved to be an olympian. Perhaps his message to young people should be something about "peer pressure". Gee, I wonder if the person who videotaped this "set him up" to sell a photo to the paparazzi! In any event, I think Michael Phelps demonstrates a great sense of character as at least he is not a liar. I am not a marijuana user and drink moderately (socially) but I have known some marijuana users and agree that if alcohol is legal, so should the use of marijuana. I think there are a lot more automobile deaths as a result from consuming alcohol.

If it was your kid would you be all gun ho on charging him. no and if charging him what about the others at the party he wasn't the only one smoking that stuff.

Three, He didn't ask to be your child's role model, you put him there along with the media. Four, He's a young athletic that has worked hard and has reached many achievements. Five, get your own life, that way you'll have less time to sit around and pass judgment on others.

Whoever it is must have a very lonely life. Would everyone be so up in arms about this if he were holding a drink in his hand? Doubt it, yet alcohol kills more people every year than marijuana. And about being a role model and all that...parents should be role models, not superstars and athletes. If you don't want your kid to smoke pot, talk to them and tell them so...since when is it Michael Phelps' job to raise your kids...get a life and get over it...

  • Considering that until 1952 pot was legal, and in the early 1920's alcohol was made illegal then was made legal again after a large outcry of polititions!!! The issue should be more of why the country tries to control everything, and that the Constitution gives us the right, as Americans, enjoy life our way. The government has more control over what the average American does than they have over the busnesses that take advantage of the general public!!!!! ON an other note the media has made some big bad mistakes about how they handle the story lines!!!

  • Here lets see.... if they make pot legal they can charge taxes, then maybe there would be more money for the government to run this country without getting loans from China.... Oh another thought, maybe the government should stop giving loans to other country's then forgiving them the loans...... Is that really the issue here? What the%%$%^)+, this is going way to far..... the media needs to start looking at the real stories about the economy and stop trying to redirect the public view away from what is really wrong with this country........ The big business's that's who are running the show on capital hill.... get rid of the lobbist.
