  • OMG, the man just passed and you're taking polls on whether or not he should have stopped smoking!! After his illness was prognois as terminal what difference did it make. Please give him and his family a break. RIP Patrick Swayze!!

    • Swayze was a drud addict of the worst kind, addicted to tobacco! He and his wife smoked in numerous places where smoking was forbidden. Like most smokers, they didn't give a damn about others. I'm glad he's gone and wish he taken the other 12% of Americans who still smoke with him!

    • If you people think it is so horable to take this poll why did you come here in the first place? Just to Bit## others out for taking the poll? Don't you have something better to do with your time? If we want to take the poll then we will and if you don't u shouldn't bother comming to the site to even comment. DORKS!

I think it's ridiculous for anyone to get mad about it. I'm sure the people who are outraged about it aren't smokers so how would they know what it's like?

  • When you are given a pancreatic cancer diagnosis, you are pretty much given a death sentence. If he had a curable cancer and didn't stop, than I would say he was being ignorant. But, like he said in his interview,if I knew I was going to live longer than 5 minutes, than I might stop. I say, at that point... go out doing what you enjoy!!!!! God bless you, Patrick.
    anonymous anonymous 9/15/09 Reply

  • Patrick should have never started smoking. That might have helped him. To say he should have stopped once he found out he had cancer is like telling Eve she shouldn't have taken a bite out of the apple. The damage was done. There was no use in him adding to his stress by trying to quit smoking at that point. It was too late. He will be sadly missed.
    anonymous anonymous 9/15/09 Reply

  • no one knows for a fact that the smoking caused the pancreatic cancer. I know people who have had that and never smoked. It's usually in the genes. Smoking can agitate it, but its usually genes.

    • If it was so easy, then why is so amny people addicted and if they do want to quit, it even costs more. My good friend has end-stage and she never smoked. It was his life and no one should judge on how he lived it. He stil worked adn at least he talked about kids not needing to stop.

I understand why he didn't quit smoking...I'm not going to judge him on that and I personally don't think anyone else should either! Especially since he did just pass and the LAST thing his poor wife/soulmate needs to hear is others passing judgement on Patrick's decisions. It's not right.....it's not right.

It's sad and perhaps a long time ago it might have made a difference, but after you already have cancer, I just don't see the point.

Once you have been diagnosed with an end stage cancer such as Patrick was, it is hard to stop old habits that may comfort you in your last days. My Grandmother died from lung cancer. Yes it is sad, but what would be even more sad would be if they couldn't have something that would calm them during their last hours.

  • Pancreatic cancer is one of the least researched cancers financially. So underdeveloped can only result in not enough drugs to combat it. Plus it's a fast growing cancer that don't leave you much time to live. SOOOO whether he quit smoking or not is irrelevant past the point of his diagnosis. Let him live and die in the way he wants. It's not up to us, like Sharon Obsourne said. So what if he smoked??? The cancer would have killed him regardless, as it's just a matter of time. People make a huge deal about nothing and need to mind their own business...Rest In Peace Patrick Swayze...We love you and are in our prayers

  • Smoking is a bad habit, but there is no evidence that it can directly cause any form of cancer, other than lung. I believe Patrick Swayze had every right to smoke after he was diagnosed. I think it's absolutely pathetic how misinformed the public is about the "seriousness" of smoking. Example: In 2005, a small group of people sued the tobacco companies for not making them aware of the negative effects. They won. But they said they would accept less money in judgement in exchange for the tobacco companies putting anti-smoking ads on television, in magazines, and even on cigarette boxes. The tobacco companies are the ones PAYING for anti-smoking ads, every single ad in fact. That is misleading, because it makes the public think that anti-smoking ads are the result of thousands of organizations, when really it's because of this small group of people who sued. Ridiculous.

Pancreatic cancer is pretty much a death sentence, and he had been diagnosed at stage 4, so the cancer was well advanced when it was found. The time for him to quit smoking should have been years ago well before he became ill. However once he was diagnosed with a TERMINAL ILLNESS, I feel there was nothing wrong with the choice he made.

  • When my husband was dying of cancer the specialist told him there was no reason for him to quit smoking and make his last days even MORE painful and stressful than they already were. Smoking is an addiction...if he had known that 40 years earlier when he started (as a teenager) he might have made different choices. He tried time after time to quit but could never quite do it. I miss him dearly, and would love to have him with me now. Times are different than they were in the 50s, 60s, 70s and even the 80s. Treating addicted smokers as pariahs is not the answer. You might be better encouraging teenagers to not start. The real villian in this subject are the Cigarette producers who advertise to teenagers, as my husband was when he began. We have three adult sons, none of whom have, or ever will, smoke. Maybe that is part of their father's legacy.

  • First of all, this "poll" i ridiculous. He just died, and you're asking whether he should have done something differently?

My grandfather died from pancreatic cancer. When he was diagnosed, he immediately stopped smoking (which was amazing because, like Swayze, he had smoked for decades). Also, like Swayze, my grandfather went through treatment and was doing "well." The thing is, with this form of Cancer, they say you're doing well if you manage to live a year after diagnosis/treatment. It is a quick killer and there is no cure. Treatment is only a method to try and prolong life.
People should quit BEFORE they get cancer, they shouldn't even start. With other cancers smoking does make a difference, with pancreatic cancer it's too late anyway. (The only harm is the smoke going into the air for others to inhale.)
Cancer is sad and a horriffic thing to go through.
    RIP Patric Swayze.

Thank you for this opportunity to express how I feel! The insider is the best!!!

This to me is not a kind question to him or his family.

However, if a terminaly ill person, weather famous or not, wants to smoke, or whatever else they do, then so be it. Who's place is it to say "He should have quit smoking?" Are you his doctor, child, or family??? Then what he does to make himself feel better is his choice, not yours. Alot of patients wish they could have changed their decision to smoke when they first started, but beings that they have cancer. Be happy until the end! It's no different than someone in the same situation deciding to eat 3 Big Macs a day until they died! That is very unhealthy too but it wouldn't save a life if they quit eating them.

  • It wouldn't have changed the outcome for him. It would probably have been harder on his body if he had quit. His body would have experienced nicotene withdrawl on top of the cancer. I'm disappointed that people are showing him smoking when he never wanted to have kids follow him.

  • I lost my mom to this cancer.. Yes she smoked and Yes I was upset when she didn't stop at first. HOWEVER... nothing was going to change the FACTS she was going to die no matter if she stopped smoking or kept on smoking. Smoking was what made her calm, happy.. and in those final days thats what matters.

  • 35 years ago next month my father died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 50. Like Patrick he was a smoker and continued to smoke after his terminal diagnosis. Stopping smoking after being told you have one of the deadliest forms of cancer wouldn't change your survival rate. Since my father died we have made little progress in the treatment of this particular form of cancer so thinking it would have changed anything if Patrick stopped smoking is kind of ridiculous. My father was given one month to live after his surgery and thru his own determination like Patrick's he fought to live for thirteen more months. It amazes me that Patrick fought and lasted almost two years after his diagnosis. We should have compassion for his family and remember Patrick for the fine actor and person he was not make judgements about how he chose to live out his last days. We'll miss him.

  • I do not support smoking in anyway as I also believe Patrick did not for any children who were presented with cigarettes. He did not support smoking in youth but when you are dying you let the person dye in peace. RIP Patrick.

  • Quitting smoking after cancer is like shutting the barn door once the horses got out...it would not have made a difference. It was something he enjoyed and in his last days let him enjoy it.

  • Samantha Harris went way too far on this one. Sharon Osbourne was definitely right - let him live his life any way he chooses - it's his life!

  • It wouldn't have made a difference if he had quit consideringthe type of cancer he had. He had the right to live his life how he chose too, atleast he had enough respect for others not to smoke around children.

  • Patrick new that he was going to die anyway. Proven facts say that most people that are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer only have about 5 years at the most to live anyway. and if he would have lived that long he still should have lived out his days like he wanted. and that is what he did!

  • Stopping smoking would not change the fact that he was dying from
pancreatic cancer. He should get to enjoy what he had left of his life.
I also find it in poor taste to dissect his behavior this soon upon his death. His poor family. This is the time for love and support, not passing judgement

  • AS a nurse, I know how bad smoking is for a person and others. However, it is a string addiction (physical and mental) and when someone is going through a painful terminal illness like Patrick it is more inportant to give whatever comfort one can have.

    • I wanted to add that everyone to all Patrick's critics the man continued working. He never said "Poor me" and he strongly advocated to others not to start. I've seen children die from terminal illnesses and I strongly believe that a person has thr right to make their own decisions. Patrick was a GREAT MAN and he fought a brave battle. RIP
