Hi, I am writing this letter to ask you in a desperate way to educate Americans about epilepsy and maybe other disabilities..I know every person has there own problems and story to tell. America is suppose to be one of the smarter nations yet when it comes to disabilities this is not true especially with epilepsy. There is approximately 2.7 million Americans with epilepsy. One out of every 100 people. Every year nearly 180,000 new cases are diagnosed.. Yet you never hear about it like you do when it comes to other disabilities. I feel that because it deals with the brain people are afraid of it and don’t want to hear about it.
Epilepsy is not a mental illness or a sign of a low I.Q. I have a B.A. degree to prove that. I can’t even volunteer for work. It is also not contagious. There are two main types of seizures: partial seizures and generalized seizures.. Partial seizures have two classifications: Simple partial seizures and Complex partial seizures. Generalized seizures most common types are classified as : Tonic clonic (grand-mal) seizures and Absence (petit mal) seizures.
Epilepsy can not be cured, yet 70-80 percent of those with epilepsy are luckily controlling their seizures and no longer having them. Then they sweep the problem under the carpet. For those who can not control their seizures I feel the difficulty with epilepsy is not even the occasional seizure, but the way people react to them due to lack of knowledge. The stories I could tell you are remarkable. Thru the years I have even written a book to educate Americans about this disorder. Yet I know only those with the problem will read the book. It will take a show like yours to enhance the knowledge of others and inform Americans, after all we are living in the 21st century. So please do a show about it.
