Call For Entries: Suffolk Landmarks and Icons

The Suffolk County Historical Society has announced a call for entries for a juried photography competition that will take place in connection with a new photography exhibition. The juried photography exhibition, entitled “Suffolk County’s Landmarks & Icons,” will open with a special reception on November 13, 2009, from 6-8pm, and will be on display at the Society (300 West Main St., Riverhead) through December 12, 2009. Jeff Schamberry, director of photography at Newsday, will serve as the competition’s juror, the winners of which will be announced at the opening reception. The exhibition will consist of current photographic work, by contemporary photographers, that depicts Suffolk County’s landmarks and icons – both natural and man made – juxtaposed with a sampling of historical photographs from the Society’s collection. The competition is open to all artists. All work must be framed, wired and ready to hang. Framed photos are not to exceed 16” x 24”. Entries without wire will not be accepted. Limit three works per artist; there is a $5 non-refundable fee for each work submitted. All work must be received at the Suffolk County Historical Society between November 3 - 6; 12:30 - 4:30 pm (labeled with artist name, address, phone, and title). Suffolk County abounds with enduring sights and symbols that evoke individual responses and reflections. Whether famous and recognizable or humble and personal, Suffolk County’s special places can be transformed by events and memories. The Suffolk County Historical Society invites amateur and professional photographers to participate in this exhibit and competition by sharing their favorite images. Stars Shine at 17th Annual Hamptons Film Fest

East Hampton was the place to be Thursday night for the screening of Pierce Brosnan's new film, "The Greatest." 007 himself had ticket holders swooning when he arrived with producer Beau St. Clair and officially kicked-off opening day at the historic Guild Hall. Longtime festival supporter and Hamptons local Alec Baldwin was also on hand and all smiles, as was our favorite piano man Billy Joel, Bob Balaban, Amanda Pennington and the film's director, Shana Feste. Earlier in the day Cheryl Hines was the guest of honor at the Women In Film Reception at The Hedges Inn. Cheryl and guests were welcomed by Hamptons Film Festival Executive Director Karen Arikian, Director of Programming David Nugent, and H.I.F.F. Chairman Stuart Suna. Cheryl was honored with the 2nd annual RoC Gold Standard in Filmmaking Award for a Feature Female Director. Her new film, Serious Moonlight, staring Meg Ryan & Timothy Hutton, was screened prior to the reception at the UA East Hampton and met with rave reviews. The day's festivities ran well into the night as the celebration continued at Gurney's Inn in Montauk. Following the screening of "The Greatest" at Guild Hall, Jitney's full of movie goers and V.I.P.'s descended upon Gurney's for their annual Opening Night Party. And, as always, the party did not disappoint. We'll be back with more photos, movie reviews and party re-caps throughout the weekend and all next, so be sure to check back. Christie Brinkley to Guest Star on Ugly Betty

Look out Wilhelmina Slater, there's a new Diva on the block. And this one may just give you a run for your Manolo's! The Hamptons own Christie Brinkley will joining the cast of Ugly Betty this season as Penelope Graybridge, a fabulously fierce fashion editor at a competing magazine. The inexplicably ageless supermodel became internationally recognizable thanks to her iconic Sports Illustrated covers and her reign as the flawless face of Cover Girl Cosmetics. Over the years, Christie has evolved into a business mogul, launching her own jewelry and fabric lines, as well as an activist, environmentalist and philanthropic powerhouse. But this mother of three is also no slouch in the acting department. Brinkley first dove into acting in 1983 as the scene stealing "Girl in the red Ferrari" in National Lampoon's Vacation. Staring opposite Chevy Chase, Brinkley's role required little dialogue but became such an instant classic that it continues to be referenced, spoofed and parodied more than 25 years later. On the small screen, Brinkley's guest appearance on NBC's Mad About You helped the sitcom, and the network, land one of their highest rated half-hour episodes. She's also hosted “Celebrity Weddings InStyle” for Lifetime, bringing equally unprecedented ratings to the cable channel, and has even tried her hand at her own lifestyle talk shown on CNN. Simply put, there's nothing this woman can't do. As Penelope Graybridge on Ugly Betty, Christie Brinkley will join an illustrious list of guest star alumni of the Emmy Award winning sitcom. Martha Stewart, Isaac Mizrahi, Kristin Chenoweth, Victoria Beckham, Vera Wang, Betty White, Naomi Campbell, and Kelly Ripa are just a few of the heavy hitters and fashion icons who have graced the halls of Mode. While U.B. producers are yet to release all of the details on Brinkley's new character, including how many episodes she'll star in, we do know that she'll be filming her scenes here in New York -- unlike Columbian pop sensation Shakira. Shakira, who will also be guest staring on the show this season, will be making her Ugly Betty debut when the cast and crew film on location in the Bahamas. MYC Explains 'Cirque Sublime' Cancellation

We weren't alone last Saturday night when we pulled into the parking lot of The Montauk Yacht Club only to find an empty field where a "Fellini-esque" Big Top should have been. As we stood there staring at an empty great lawn, like completely confused puppies, we noticed a few equally confused guests who, like us, never received the memo that the Cirque Sublime event had been cancelled. So we had to ask...what happened to the contortionists, fire-eaters, mentalists and erotic aerialists? No one on-site at MYC had much info for us on Saturday night, so we turned to General Manager Lloyd Van Horn and asked for the inside scoop on the cancellation -- and why we weren't notified. According to Mr. Van Horn, there was a cancellation notice sent out to the media from Alchimia Public Relations. "Unfortunately," said Mr. Van Horn, BlogHamptons.com was inadvertently omitted from that notification list. He apologized for the oversight and added that cancellation of Cirque Sublime "was a huge loss for us as we were really looking forward to the event." Better late than never, we have since received that cancellation notice: Producers of the planned “Cirque Sublime” extravaganza slated for September 26 at the Montauk Yacht Club announced the cancellation of the upcoming performance, citing a misunderstanding with the town regarding the permits necessary for the erection of the tent on the property of the Montauk Yacht Club. Unfortunately, there was not enough time to rectify the situation by the end of this week. Lloyd Van Horn, General Manger of the Montauk Yacht Club, hopes that the producers will be able to reschedule for a date in early spring of 2010 once they have obtained the proper permits.
